Linen fiber

Linen fiberThis insulator is made of linen fibers too short to be used in the textile industry. Excellent thermal insulator, its sound insulation capabilities are also well-known. It is a good regulator since it has the capacity to absorb and then restore moisture.

Linen fiber comes in panels, rolls or felts. They can be used to insulate walls, roofs, floors and attics. It is easy to implement, mostly thanks to its woolly texture.

Linen is a strong fiber which has great longevity. The insulator is often treated with boron salt to resist mold, insects and fire.

It is commonly available at the same price as hemp wool.

Ecological paints

Ecological paintsVegetable oils and natural pigments, already present in prehistoric times in our ancestors’ caves, have been used for thousands of years as natural paints.

Nowadays, ecological paints are made from bees wax, linen or castor oils, natural resins or extracts of citrus. They can also be found based on casein powder or lime. These paints are often neutral or white: natural pigments can be added in order to color them.

These non-toxic, organic paints have the great advantage of not being derived from petroleum. They are biodegradable, odorless and harmless to health. Beware however for allergy sufferers, who may be sensitive to extracts of citrus.

Another advantage is that the ecological paints often have a much greater penetrating power (thanks to linen oil). Their covering power is excellent and they also have a very good durability.

Cotton wool

Cotton woolCotton wool as an insulator is often made of natural cotton as well as cotton recycled from waste and cuts of clothing. It is therefore a green material. It is better to choose recycled cotton wool, the conventional cultivation of cotton being very polluting. It is both a thermal and sound insulator.

Cotton wool comes in rolls, felt and plates, but its use as felt is mainly for sound insulation. This insulator can be used for walls, roofs and floors. Cotton wool is treated against fungi, xylophages and dust mites and it can be treated with boron salt to make it fire resistant. It is a good hygrometric controller as it is very permeable to water vapor.

Cotton wool is relatively expensive (more than hemp and wood wools) but recycled wool offers the best prices.

Bamboo flooring

Bamboo flooringBamboo is a plant which grows quite fast (its growth is one of the fastest in the world) and thus allows an important use without endangering the ecosystem. It can be presented varnished or natural and offers a good resistance as well as a very good flexibility. It is even more resistant than oak flooring (until 30 % harder) and it dilates or narrows twice less. It is also warmer than wood to the touch and it resists molds very well. Finally, the ecological balance of this material is excellent.

This material’s durability is indisputable. There is no risk of having to replace it after four or five years, as a floating parquet floor.

Bamboo is available from 15 Euros the square meter. Its price varies however quite much and can go up to 50 Euros the square meter according to the flooring type.
